What resources does Good Beginnings offer?

Good Beginnings has two publications designed to help volunteers, communities, individuals and donors learn more about its program.

Tales from the Crib

Tales from the Crib is a compilation of training advice and stories told by the people who are most intimately involved in the organization - its volunteers and staff. It is a wonderful resource for new volunteers to show them the reality of home visiting, the many issues that families face, and how personally rewarding it can be to offer help during those first few exhausting months following the birth of a baby.

We hope that the book will raise awareness about the importance of providing support at this critical time in a family's and baby's life. "For new mothers, the book is an affirmation of the feelings she has - of joy and exhaustion and everything in between - that all new mothers experience, regardless of whether it is a first or a fifth baby," says Ann Bradley, executive director of Good Beginnings. "The book was also meant to be a resource to other communities that are considering starting a Good Beginnings program. It helps grant makers understand the essence of the support - that in this increasingly mobile society, families are often without a network of support. And, finally, as women read and think about Tales from the Crib, they may be motivated to become a Good Beginnings volunteer."

Tales from the Crib is $7.50. It is available at the Norwich Bookstore or by calling the Good Beginnings office at (603) 448-6826.

Getting Started Guide

Good Beginnings of the Upper Valley has been connecting volunteers and families with newborn babies for quite a while, and we like to think we've learned a thing or two about helping families through this joyful and stressful time in their lives. That's why we created the Getting Started Guide - to share what we've learned, guide where we can and encourage you to start your own Good Beginnings program.

As with any destination, there are many roads you can take toward your goal of helping families and the Getting Started Guide is by no means the definitive map. Remember, you have lots of valuable experience of your own and there are plenty of books, Web sites and reference materials to add to what we've provided here. But it will start you off on the right foot with advice and support materials.

Getting Started Guide is available to individuals and organizations interested in starting a Good Beginnings satellite in their town. Please call the Good Beginnings office at (603) 298-9524.
